The way they explain it ,it sounds like they are using gas pressure to stop the combustion gasses sneaking past the piston.Weird and interesting

save this link and look it up in 3 years to see if anything happened. I think ringless seals of this type are more common than you think in centrifugal gas compressors and rocket engines. The problem is that they require extremely fine tolerances and accurate machining to work. This sounds to have similar potential to the many schemes proposed to replace the conventional piston engine. Its in the category of things that are interesting ideas that have very real practical challenges that prevent their adoption.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't ideal compression (above the piston) somewhere around 200psi? Wouldn't that mean you'd have to have, like, 200psi of pressure below the piston...but only during combustion...oh jeez, my brain is melting...
